SVED's Two Big Goals for 2017

1.
Extend the LOT for Air 5 years

Last week Ketchum, Sun Valley, and Hailey confirmed the benefits of the 1% LOT for Air by extending the original five years for another five. Fly Sun Valley Alliance, Visit Sun Valley, Sun Valley Resort, SVED, The Chamber, and Realtors for Air, are extremely pleased to have seen that the community overwhelmingly supported improved air service and marketing.

The three year results of the first LOT for Air were touted by the campaigns as the reason to extend the LOT and it resonated with the voters. The many supporters and volunteers for the campaign can take great pride in the results.

Our economy and community will benefit from improved tourism, more jobs, and businesses locating and growing here. Locals will enjoy more opportunities to connect with family and friends. There is a LOT to Love!

2.
Promote the need for action on Middle Income Housing and work with community organizations to do what is necessary to develop MIH now.

SVED's Middle Income Housing Project has four key elements:
  • Research need and project opportunity for MIH
  • Educate local government and the public
  • Collaborate with the community on potential solutions
  • Advocate with sense of urgency to get housing built
How are we doing so far? We are making progress in demonstrating the need and educating governments on the housing crisis in the $225,000 to $425,000 price range. We are also linking developers, landowners, contractors and potential investors across our community on specific projects.

Without new middle income housing stock, businesses and local government won't be able to fill jobs, and our economy will stagnate or decline along with our quality of place. With a near record low unemployment rate of 2.8%, we need workers to move here to take jobs. Where are they going to rent or buy if our median home price is over $400,000? The most general answer to this dilemma is let builder/ developers have more density with changed zoning, reduced regulations, and speedier decision making. Without these changes, we are just spinning our wheels.

SVED is working hard on ideas across Blaine County to find a breakthrough on MIH. At our next Members Only Meeting September 6th, we hope to have a positive report on our efforts at working hand in hand with government leadership and planning staff to kick-start specific solutions. Without such collaborative efforts, just imagine our situation one or two years from now...will we have added a meaningful supply of moderately priced housing stock? Will there be any reasonable priced rentals available? We aren't getting help from Washington or Boise. We have to find our own locally grown solutions.

Register Now For The KIC Startup Showcase
Entrepreneurs Welcome to Present on June 22nd

The Ketchum Innovation Center (KIC) will hold its first annual Startup Showcase on Thursday, June 22, from 4-8 p.m.

This is an opportunity for entrepreneurs, startups and existing businesses to set up a booth in the KIC to showcase and discuss their projects, products and ideas with our entire community, members of the Sun Valley Band of Angels & Mentors, and other potential investors.

The Norman Friedman Entrepreneur Award, a $1,000 cash prize made available through the generosity of a local resident, will be given out by a panel of judges from the KIC's Board and volunteer mentor group. As well, a number of non-cash prizes will be awarded through event sponsorship from Zions Bank. Participants will be judged on the viability, impact and creativity. Lastly, winners will be given a month of free rent at the KIC, including desk space, free high-speed fiber Internet and use of the conference room.

"Importantly, this event is open to all entrepreneurs, from those with just an idea that they would like to pursue, to those with a fleshed-out business plan, to those that are already generating revenue," said Jon Duval, executive director of the KIC. "We want this to become an annual event where all of our startups and entrepreneurs feel welcome to share their ideas, services and products with the support of entire Wood River Valley."

For those that want to take it a step further, there will be an opportunity for companies to give a short pitch to the audience, a valuable chance for startups looking for specific support, whether in the form of investment, mentorship or partners. Time will be limited, so those looking to hone their message are welcome to reach out to the KIC for help.
In addition to prizes, Zions Bank, which has become a consistent market leader in US Small Business Administration lending, will be providing free hors d'oeuvres and refreshments.

For more details, to register or RSVP for this event, please send an email to jon.duval@ketchuminnovationcenter.com
or call Jon Duval at 208-727-2117.
